Both programs teach major theories of sociology and psychology, as well as providing knowledge of basic mental health conditions and practical skills for working with alcohol and drug-affected people with mental health issues. They feature a practical work placement that will be assessed by CIT, which can be completed in Canberra or the student’s country of origin.

If you are wishing to enter or are already working in the field, the Certificate IV program offers specialist skills, techniques and theories including learning to work in an alcohol and other drugs context, assessing the needs of clients and dealing with legal and ethical compliance.

Students advancing to the diploma-level program will develop further skills, techniques and approaches to community welfare. They will build on their skills by investigating the impacts of sociological factors on clients and taking a continuous approach to developing professional practice.

This program includes work placement (Cert IV qualifications requires 80 hours and Diploma qualifications 120 hours of placement). Before undertaking any industry placement, you must be eligible to apply for, and hold, a 'Working with Vulnerable People Check'. Information will be provided on enrolment.

      Diploma: 120 hours, unpaid.

Students are encouraged to and regularly find their industry placements; however there is an Industry Placement Coordinator who manages relationships with community organisations throughout the Australia Capital Territory and who helps students finding an adequate placement.
